Old Bones is one of the Light Series of works inspired by travels along the M4 to visit my mother. Mentions of aches and pains in her old bones were an often repated conversation. “Just old bones, dear”. I was struck at the start of Spring by some bright bare trees against the freshly ploughed reddish brown soil. The shape of the trees made me think of a rib-cage.

Whilst colour and movement remain key to my work sometimes it is just a subtle notion of movement. Time is passing. The light is moving so fast we don’t see it. Unusually I am moving rather than the subject. A snapshot burnt onto my retina to capture in this naive style.

I also took the opportunity to use different media with the Light Series of works. This is completed in acrylic both painted and put on with acrylic pen. The tree trunks are textured with paste medium. My usual layering technique sees the painting change colour a little in different lights.

Image: 40 x 40 x 1 cm canvas on shallow stretchers. The image goes slightly around the edge. The rest of the edge is painted chalk-white.
