For those of you who’ve not made it to watch Le Tour or T’Tour in person Out Front captures a feeling of the riders being there one minute and gone the next. The background is the deep greens of the Yorkshire countryside. It’s best to arrive several hours before the peleton is due to come theough. The locals may have put on stalls of food and drinks. There may be local exhibtiions or farming competitions going on. You’ll also want to chat to the superfans whose ears are glued to their radios as they follow progress.
The gendarmes come through, the commercial caravan comes through. The crowd gets noiser, especially if they’ve caught some of the sugar-loaded sweets thrown out. People don team wear or newly acquired yellow Le Tour caps (blue if T’Tour). Children are let through to the front. Photographers grab every box or raised area they can if not official media.
Then the riders are whooshing by, those Out Front first. Then their supports and the peleton. Then the stragglers and the last official or gendarm. In less than five minutes it’s all gone through. Where they really there at all?
Acrylic painting 41 x 41 x 1.5 cm. The painting continuing on the canvas wrapped round the shallow stretchers.
